A minimum of 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
